Karen Horton

When I was about 5 years old, my paternal grandmother took me to the First Christian Church in Blackwell, OK. My parents were both saved but were from different denominations and were struggling with which church to attend. I LOVED everything about church — especially that it was God’s house and I could go to God’s house. My dedication as a little child caused my parents to make a decision regarding churches and we began to worship as a family. My parents modeled their Christian experience for me so I was encouraged to grow in my relationship with the Lord.

Jesus was a constant companion - His presence was very real to me. On Easter Sunday, 1956 when I was 10 years old, I couldn’t wait for the altar call. I knew that I wanted with all my heart to make a public commitment to the Lord I loved and to try my best to serve Him. What a day! Easter has always been the most special day of all for me - the Resurrection is everything to me. On Sunday afternoon, June 24, 1956 I followed the Lord in baptism.

My life changed because now I was absolutely certain that He would always be the center of my life and that I would walk with Him and talk with Him unti He called me home. Now, 50 years later, I have had a full life of mercy and grace. I’ve made so many mistakes — all of them forgiven. I have learned that each thing that happens in my life (good or bad) is a treasure to be shared with my child and grandchildren. I want them to know that His love is so great that even when we are at our lowest point — He’s there. I want to model what my parents modeled for me. My journey has been one of getting to know Him better daily. My favorite verse is Isaiah 40:29-31 and He continues to give me eagle’s wings that I may serve Him more.
